Why doesn't my PDF view within my web browser on a Mac?
This is because the Acrobat 6 is planned to work with the Safari browser - not IE! Since Safari was in beta when Acrobat 6 was released - Adobe decided not to include any type of browser support - Windows users are unaffected. At present the only way that you can view PDFs on the Mac platform is to download the 'Schubert-IT' plug-in which only displays the PDF in a graphical state - no forms fill-in or overprint preview!
Why can't I access my plug-ins?
This is because the carbonised version of Acrobat does work differently to the classic version. There are 2 methods of adding/removing plug-ins to/from Acrobat 6 (incidently - the plug-in software should install the plug-in as default) 1) Select the Acrobat 6 application and then hit COMMAND-I - now head for the 'Plug-Ins' category - you can then either deselect or browse for your plug-in. 2) Select your 'Acrobat' application then CONTROL-click and select 'show package contents'. Now go 'Contents/Plug-ins'!
Why I am always asked for my serial number, even if I have supplied this beforehand?
This is due to permissions within OS X. The easiest way is to go to '/User/Library/Acrobat User Data' and ensure that this folder has write access.
How do I display the art, trim and bleed boxes?
This is an extremely useful tool to display the page geometry of your PDF file. Sometimes, even though your PDF might look good in the Acrobat view (crop box), then it can render/impose incorrectly. This is because there are 5 different page boxes ina PDF file. The art, trim, crop, media and bleed boxes. Acrobat 6 can now display the art, trim and bleed boxes by default. This means you can visually see if your PDF will render/impose correctly. Turn this option ON within the PREFERENCES/PAGE DISPLAY option.
Where has WebDAV gone?
Since there is no Web browser support as yet for OS X - then WebDAV has not been included to date. The 'web based distributed authoring and versioning' protocol allows on-line collaboration of simultaneous connections. If you require this functionality then stick with Acrobat 5 on OS 9 or utilise the Windows platform.
Can I add rulers to my PDF page?
Yes you can - in fact you can measure distances between both regular and irregular points. Access this great feature through the MEASURING option in the TOOLS menu. Turn ON the rulers preferences from the VIEW menu.
Why can't I Distill any PDFs? I get a 'showpage' or 'DistillSave' error.
This is due to one of many possible issues. 1. Norton Anti-Virus 9 - autoscan 2. Spellcatcher 3. Repair your disk permissions from your Disk Utility application. Another suggested fix is to disable any type of colour management (as a test).
Why don't my keyboard accelerators work anymore?
The default is Acrobat 6 is to disable these time-savers. If you want to turn them back on then go to EDIT/PREFERENCES/GENERAL and select 'Use single key accelerators to access tools'.
Why can't my client read a PDF I sent via 'Send by E-mail for Review'?
This is because only Acrobat 6 Windows users can participate in the review function. They are actually trying to open a .fdf document - not a PDF. This file only contains the markup/commenting data plus some other metadata associated with the original file.
Is this true that my movie files can now be directly embedded into my PDF?
Yes - but ensure to use the 'Acrobat 6' compatability. In the movie tool import options, you have the choice ... the version 5 option will point to an external movie file - the version 6 option will embed the movie file into the PDF!
Why can't I see an Acrobat plug-in I installed?
In your preferences /startup selection - ensure the option 'enable certified plug-ins' is not selected
The 'text attributes' selection has vanished. How do I modify the text attributes?
When you edit text using the TEXT TOUCHUP TOOL then right click and select PROPERTIES from the menu. You can now select your text attributes.
How do I create a single PDF from multiple PDF files?
You can take advantage of the 'Create PDF from Multiple' command in the toolbar. Select PDFs (or any other file format such as TIFF, EPS, BMP etc.) and then add them to a 'run list' Once you commit the action you will be presented with a file called 'Binder1' which contains all the merged PDFs.
I use a plug-in from Creo called the 'Refiner' in Distiller 5 - where do I put it in Distiller 6 ?
WINDOWS - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Adobe PDF 6.0\Startup. Please remember to remove any files already in this folder.
MAC OS X - /Users/Shared/Adobe PDF 6.0/Startup. Please remember to remove any files already in this folder.
How can I disable a plug-in on a temporary basis?
WINDOWS - Browse to the 'Programs/Adobe/Acrobat 6/Acrobat/plug_ins/' directory and move the plug-in or folder onto your desktop. Re-start Acrobat.
MAC OS X - Select the Acrobat application from the 'Applications/Acrobat 6 Professional' folder. Highlight the application and perform a COMMAND-I (get info) - now in the 'Plug-Ins' category just de-select the plug-in from the last. Re-start Acrobat.
I have just created a PDF with 'smallest file size' and the fonts are strange. When I view my PDF on my computer everything is fine. If my client views the PDF the fonts are different. Why is this?
This is because the fonts are not actually embedded into the document with this Distiller job option. The reason why you see everything as correct is that in Acrobat you have the 'Use local fonts' option selected under the ADVANCED menu. Once this is deselected, it will view the PDF in the correct proofing manner - i.e. you see what your client see's. Our advice is to modify the Distiller job option to embed the font to begin with!
Why can't my service bureau/printer accept my PDFs from Distiller 6?
This might be for a number of reasons - namely their RIP/Renderer is not yet equipped to deal with some of the Distiller job options you have selected. Use the 'PDF/X-1a' settings and everything will be correct. Remember not to go back into the PDF after saving as a 'PDF/X-1a' file - otherwise it will not hold its certification and PDF version.
I export my Word document to a PDF but I cannot get the headings as bookmarks on my Mac. Why is this?
Get used to the fact that Acrobat 6 on the Mac is not as powerful as its Windows brother! There are no fancy Visual Basic hooks into Word for Mac - only very simple Word--> PDF creation via the 'PDF Maker' icon in the toolbar.
Why is 'print separations' greyed out in Acrobat 6 Professional?
This functionality will only work when connected to a postscript printer.
