Pensord first specialist magazine printer signing up to two sides

Award-winning sheet-fed magazine printer Pensord is showing its commitment to sustainability in customary pioneering fashion by being the first specialist magazine printer to sign up to the paper industry’s Two Sides campaign, which addresses the misunderstanding and myths at large on the issue of paper and its effect on the environment.

The National Association of Paper Merchants Two Sides campaign is gathering pace, driven by the Print and Paper Sustainability Group that features major industry figures such as BPIF Chief Executive Michael Johnson and NAPM President Alistair Gough. Support is already strong from the industry supply side, and now Pensord has become the first specialist magazine printer to get involved.

Pensord Chief Executive Tony Jones explains why: “Great efforts are continually being made to reduce the environmental impact of the paper industry, yet there is a lot of misconception and misunderstanding out there on the whole sustainability of paper issue, and we want to play our part in ensuring that arguments are balanced and fair, and that the industry and the wider public are given the facts to enable them to take an informed view. We have been impressed with the Two Sides campaign, and are happy to help out and hopefully engage others in the printing industry to lend their support.”

Pensord is in a strong position to talk on issues of sustainability. Last year the printer achieved ISO 14001 with a full Environmental Management System, formalising many of the company’s existing practises. Pensord also received FSC®(Forest Stewardship Council®) certification, and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), two approaches to showing a chain of custody of paper from managed forests, tracing forest products through the supply chain to the end-consumer. They look at the origin of the fibre in the paper and ensure that it is sourced from sustainably managed forests.

Two Sides Director Martyn Eustace said “It’s great to see that Pensord have recognised the importance of getting the sustainability message across and have joined the Two Sides initiative. We’re now a group of over 80 companies, representing all the important players right across the Graphic Communications Supply Chain. I hope other printers follow Pensord’s leadership”.

Two Sides is delivering some hard hitting messages to counter paper’s perceived negative impact on the environment. Among them are:

  • Paper is a carbon neutral resource
  • More trees are planted than harvested for making paper
  • There are 25% more trees in the developed world now than in 1901
  • Forestry, paper and packaging are amongst the most sustainable industries in existence
  • Paper is one of few materials for which recycling works
  • The average UK citizen’s use of paper consumes as much energy as a 60W light bulb in a year
